Talking to parents about myopia control

By Dr. Hayat Ahmad Khan ·

Parents often arrive believing that myopia is a harmless inconvenience that glasses fix. Explaining what is really at stake, and what treatment can and cannot do, is the most important part of the consultation.

Explain the eye, not only the glasses

Say that myopia means the eye is growing too long, and that a longer eye is more fragile later in life. Show the axial length and, if you can, a growth chart. Many parents act once they see that the aim is protecting the eye, not thinning the lenses.

Be honest about what treatment does

  • Treatment slows growth on average; it does not stop myopia or reverse it.
  • Results vary. Some children respond strongly and others little, which is why you measure and review.
  • Treatment works only while it is used as prescribed, every day.
  • Be clear about the risks of each option, including infection with contact lenses and light sensitivity with atropine.

Make the choice together

Ask about the child's routine, comfort with contact lenses or drops, sport, school and cost. Present two good options and say which you prefer and why. Families who choose a treatment that fits their life are more likely to continue it.

Plan the follow-up before they leave

  • Book the next measurement visit, usually in 6 months.
  • Give a written plan: what to use, when, and what to do if something is wrong.
  • Agree what a good result looks like, so no one is surprised at review.
  • Add outdoor time and good near-work habits, whichever treatment is chosen.

If the response is poor

Tell families early that a change or a combination may be needed. Most are relieved to hear that there is a plan, not a verdict.
